The great escape

I don’t know what I had been thinking when I agreed to join Laura and Timothy on their trip to Glastonbury. We arrived in the morning well in time before the first concert and already the place resembled more a battlefield than festival premises. People in rain coats and wellies were standing around, drinking beer and smoking God-knows-what, and the smell of simmering oil and spices was everywhere. After we had put up the tent, we made our way to the stage and soon the concert began. The music was loud and hard but not at all unpleasant, and when I finally caught a glimpse of the stage, I couldn’t believe my eyes. On stage were four girls playing giant electric guitars and, believe it or not, the moment I saw them, the lead singer called out my name and pointed her finger at me…

… shouting that I should climb all the way up the stage.                                                                             First I stood there in a shock, but a few seconds later, I realized the band member obviously had meant me. On the stage, clearly in front of me, was my old childhood friend Marlene, who pointed her finder straight at me and smiled with a warm and friendly face downwards me.

I had not seen her for years, because her family moved to Germany. I was so touched by seeing her again, that I pushed through the crowd of people towards the stage.                                              Marlene reached for my hand, as I grabbed it she pulled me up the stage. We hugged each other and had to smile. I was so surprised.

“This is one of my childhood friends, Carolyn. With her help we are now going to rock this stage! Are you all ready? “, she explained to the audience and made them scream for another song. Marlene blinked and I knew what I was supposed to do. I had to rock like a hurricane.

As I jumped with Marlene all over the stage and encouraged the listeners to clap their hands and sing, I felt grandiose. The other girls of the band also gave their all and everybody felt how they put their hearts in every single song. At the end of their performance everybody was extremely impressed.

After the show, Marlene and I exchanged telephone numbers and she mentioned that she would be in town for two weeks, so we could meet. Furthermore, was I abled to ask about their giant guitars which are their official band trademark.

When I left, I had to run from people who wanted to ask me about Marlene and the band. Many strangers wanted me to ask Marlene for an autograph, but I ran off as if I was afraid of them.        How could I possibly have known that Marlene would be of such utter importance for the music industry?

All in all I had to flee from crazy fans during the festival. It was totally exhausting, but great fun.
